3-D Simulations of MHD Jets - The Stability Problem
نویسندگان
چکیده
Non-relativistic three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of Poynting-fluxdominated (PFD) jets are presented. Our study focuses on the propagation of strongly magnetized hypersonic but sub-Alfvénic flow (C2 s << V 2 jet < V 2 A) and the development of a current-driven (CD) kink instability. This instability may be responsible for the "wiggled" structures seen in VLBI-scale AGN jets. In the present paper we investigate the nonlinear behavior of PFD jets in a variety of external ambient magnetized gas distributions, including those with density, pressure, and temperature gradients. Our numerical results show that PFD jets can develop kink distortions in the trans-Alfvénic flow case, even when the flow itself is still strongly magnetically dominated. In the nonlinear development of the instability, a non-axisymmetric mode grows on time scales of order the Alfvén crossing time (in the jet frame) and proceeds to disrupt the kinematic and magnetic structure of the jet. Because of a large scale poloidal magnetic field in the ambient medium, the growth of surface modes (i.e., MHD Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities) is suppressed. The CD kink mode (m = 1) grows faster than the other higher order modes (m > 1), driven in large part by the radial component of the Lorentz force.

Structure and Stability of Keplerian MHD Jets
MHD jet equilibria that depend on source properties are obtained using a simplified model for stationary, axisymmetric and rotating magnetized outflows (Lery et al. Lery et al. 1998,Lery et al. 1999a). The present rotation laws are more complex than previously considered and include a Keplerian disc. The ensuing jets have a dense, current-carrying central core surrounded by an outer collar with...
متن کاملRotational Stabilization of Magnetically Collimated Jets
We investigate the launching and stability of extragalactic jets through nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation and linear eigenmode analysis. In the simulations of jet evolution, a small-scale equilibrium magnetic arcade is twisted by a differentially rotating accretion disk. These simulations produce a collimated outflow which is unstable to the current driven m = 1 kink mode for low ...
متن کاملTesting Observational Techniques with 3D MHD Jets in Clusters
Observations of X-ray cavities formed by powerful jets from AGN in galaxy cluster cores are commonly used to estimate the mechanical luminosity of these sources. We test the reliability of observationally measuring this power with synthetic X-ray observations of 3-D MHD simulations of jets in a galaxy cluster environment. We address the role that factors such as jet intermittency and orientatio...
متن کاملNumerical Modeling of AGN Jets: Formation of Magnetically Dominated Lobes and Stability Properties of Current-carrying Jets
We argue the behavior of Poynting flux-dominated outflows from AGN in the galactic cluster systems by performing three-dimensional MHD simulations within the framework of the ”magnetic tower” model. Of particular interests are the structure of MHD waves, the cylindrical radial force balance, the (de)collimation, and the stability properties of magnetic tower jets. Transition between the jet/lob...
متن کاملMHD simulations of radiative jets from young stellar objects: Hα emission
We study the Hα emission from jets using two-dimensional axisymmetrical simulations. We compare the emission obtained from hydrodynamic (HD) simulations with that obtained from magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations. The magnetic field is supposed to be present in the jet only, and with a toroidal configuration. The simulations have time-dependent ejection velocities and different intensities f...
